President's Message
July Greetings
  by Clarissa Grill

It is so hard to believe that it is July already. The saying that time really goes by quickly as you get older seems so true to me now. I don’t know about you, but I find myself examining my life, reminiscing more, wondering how I ever got to be this old, and most importantly asking myself these questions, am I truly using my God given talents to serve Him daily and I’m I deepening my own spirituality. As Serran and Friends of Serra we are constantly given the opportunity to do so. Don’t wait to be asked to volunteer to help in a Serra event, just volunteer. Make a commitment to attend our monthly membership meeting which promises an excellent informative program, wonderful fellowship along with a delicious meal.

For those of you who were unable to attend our June meeting, our club’s 2009-2010 officers and trustees were installed. They solemnly pledged themselves to perform faithfully and impartially the duties of their office of Serra that they assumed.

In addition, all attending Serrans, rededicated themselves willingly and with whole heart to fulfilling the objectives of Serra and the goals set for our club. The Prayer of Saint Ignatius Loyola was recited and is provided below for those who were unable to attend to allow you to rededicate yourself.

“Dear Lord, teach me to be generous, teach me to serve you as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for any reward, save that of knowing that I do your will, O” God. Amen.

I am very happy to inform everyone that there has been a great response to our cookout for our seminarians and Northland priests on July 8th. Hope to see you there.

Our Father in Faith
  by Fr. Jim Schrader

Recently, the first reading at weekday Masses was about Abraham. We read about Abraham all week long. Abraham must be important in our faith journey. In the New Testament Abraham is called "our Father in faith." He is a preeminent example of faith and a model for us who have been baptized in faith. How is Abraham our father in faith? Yahweh says to Abraham: "Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father's house to a land I will show you." Yahweh was asking Abraham to let go of the tried, the old, the familiar, and to go to a land God will show him. God was asking Abraham to step out into the untried, the new, and the unfamiliar. Abraham accepted on the word of God. And that is faith. This total surrender to Yahweh merits Abraham the title "Our father in faith." Abraham did as God directed; he left the familiar...his relatives, neighbors, the environment he had enjoyed for many, many years. "Go to a land I will show you. I will make you the father of a large nation." Abraham believed this, even though he and his wife, Sarah, were beyond child-bearing years.

The faith of Abraham is our model and inspiration as we follow the Risen Lord to Glory. We want to cling to that faith given us in our baptism. Whenever I think of faith and its role in our life as disciples, I recall an image I saw 30 or 40 years ago. It is etched in my memory. And the image was in a high school religion text. It showed a young man standing by the highway, thumbing a ride. In his right hand, held high, was a sign indicating his desired destiination. The sign did not say "St Louis" or "Chicago" or "Denver." The sign simply said ANYWHERE. I love that image of faith. At every Mass the Risen Lord calls us to deeper faith. At every Mass we thank God for those who inspired and nourished our faith...parents, teachers, devoted lay people, married or single, priests, Brothers and Sisters. Every Mass we ask our Risen Lord for deeper faith...like the faith of Abraham, our Father in Faith.

July Picnic - July 8, 2009
  by Joyce Bischof

We are excited about our big pot luck this Wednesday, July 8. We will be inviting all our seminarians and our priests from the Northland. All the other Serra clubs in our district will also be invited. We will all bring a nice large dish to serve. The meat, buns and condiments will be provided by our St. Therese Knights--thanks to them. This will be in the Wooldrige Center at St. Therese Parish.

In August, we will have Nathan Stanley from FOCUS speak with us. He will bring one of the young missionaries. Please join us for a very interesting and uplifting evening.

Thanks to Tom Robinson we will have Fr. Charles Rowe talk with us in September on the End of Life issues in the church. I am already getting my questions ready.

We have a speaker in mind for October, and will let you know next month.

In November, we will have a mass and potluck dinner at a parish TBA (Holy Family?).

In December, all the Serra Clubs are invited to the Mass and dinner for the Seminarians on Dec. 26, at St. Thomas More.
