November Potluck by Clarissa Grill |
Wow, it’s hard to believe it's November already!!! With this month comes the opportunity to reflect on the numerous blessings we have received this year. As I reflect on mine, our Northland Serra Club is definitely included. We will be celebrating our 5th year anniversary at our membership meeting this coming Wednesday, November 11th. Reflecting over the last five years since the establishment of our club, our Diocese has seen the number of our seminarians drastically grow, our membership has supported and continues to support in every way possible the Serra mission and we have experienced very informative guest speakers who have assisted us in learning more about our faith and growing in our spiritual life. We couldn’t have made it these last five years without the guidance and total support of the Downtown Club, Southeast Club, and District Governors. They were there when we were trying to get established and continue to be there for our club. Special Serran friendships have developed between our club members and with our fellow Serrans thru out the Diocese. We have been very blessed. Thank you, Lord.
Our fellow Serran, Linda Nelson has worked very hard in setting up “Growing Vocations in the Home: What’s Your Soil Like?" which is being presented by Bob and Kelly Roper on November 18th at 7:00 p.m. at St. Therese Parish in the Wooldridge Center. Bob and Kelly will discuss ways to cultivate the soil of our homes to be fertile gardens for holy priests and religious, mothers and fathers, and/or single adults. They will draw wisdom from Scripture, the Saints, and local and national surveys to identify action steps to help us prepare our children and grandchildren for whatever God has planned for them. Our club will be providing desserts and beverages. There will also be a raffle. You should have received an invitation and your raffle tickets in the mail. A free will donation will be taken up to help support vocation work in our Diocese. Please extend an invitation to your family and friends. If you would like to volunteer and haven’t done so yet, you can contact Linda at (816) 781-4301.
The Downtown Club is sponsoring a Chili Supper on Sunday, November 22nd at St. Thomas More Parish from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The proceeds will be used to help cover the cost of the Seminarian Retreat at the Lake of the Ozarks. This is a special ministry for their club. Let’s give them our support.
Have a very blessed Thanksgiving. |

Growing Vocations in the Home - Roper Presentation by Linda Nelson |
Growing Vocations in the Home: What's Your Soil Like?
Our club will be sponsoring a presentation given by Bob and Kelly Roper on Wednesday, November 18th, titled “Growing Vocations in the Home: What’s Your Soil Like?” In this talk Bob and Kelly will discuss ways to cultivate the soil of our homes to be fertile gardens for holy priests and religious, mothers and fathers, and/or single adults. They will draw wisdom from Scripture, the Saints, and local and national surveys to reach conclusions and identify action steps that will help us to prepare our children and grandchildren for whatever God has planned for them.
The presentation will be at St. Therese Parish, Wooldridge Center, 7207 NW Highway 9, Kansas City, Mo. It will begin at 7 p.m. We will be raffling off three items: First prize: A beautiful framed print of the Pieta by Jason Jenicke; Second Prize, Framed print of St. John Vianney with prayer for priests by Jason Jenicke; Third Prize: The Priest Game. We will also be accepting a Free Will donation to help us in our support of vocations in our diocese. We need each of our members to bring a dessert that night. All desserts need to be at the church no later than 6:30 p.m. If you have not signed up to help with any committees for this activity or have any questions, contact Linda Nelson at 781-4301. |

Why Be a Serran? by Sandy Sutton, Editor |
Why be a Serran?
I pondered this about three months after I joined Serra. After being sent a brochure and materials about Serra, I was asked to consider joining the club up North and did so as a favor to my sponsor. I told my sponsor that I would just take a look see. I asked the usual questions: what is Serra; what do the members do; is there a fee to join; where do they meet? I attended 3 or so meetings, but didn’t really know if Serra was the right fit for me. I decided to quit. I turned in my resignation, but was asked to reconsider, so I remained a member. I was reminded that I had not been to any of the Serra functions, and that I wasn’t a member of a committee. I continued to attend the meetings and really did enjoy the speakers. But I was still trying to figure out this club. What could I do? How could I help? Where did I fit in? I continued to be encouraged to go to some of the functions and get busy on a committee. So I attended my first function. I even joined a committee. My supporters were right. You don’t really get a true feel for what Serra is if you just come to the meetings. Part of what makes Serrans special is our quest for knowledge and growth in spirituality. But Serra is much more than just a monthly dinner meeting with an educational speaker.
Serra is praying for vocations once a day and attending at least one mass a month for vocations. Serra is seeing a priest or seminarian being fitted for a new suit, or receiving a gift certificate, or one of the many other gifts and prizes donated every year at the annual Priests and Seminarians Golf and Card Tournament. Serra is watching as a seminarian is ordained a transitional deacon; and then congratulating him one year later as he is ordained a priest. Serra is seeing the joy on the faces of sisters and nuns as they celebrate their 25th, 50th, or even 75th jubilee. Serra is talking to a new seminarian who is learning English and full of wonder at the greatness of our country. Serra is seeing the amazement on the faces of the sisters and nuns as they enter the host house for the annual Sisters’ Picnic and see all the food and treats, and all the people who have come to make the day special just for them. Serra is bending down to say hello to an elderly sister sitting in a chair, just to be friendly, and finding out that she has a Master’s Degree in Teaching, was a teacher for many years, AND is 99 years old!!!
Serra is many things. What is Serra to you? What will be your memories? |

Adoration Schedule of Northland Churches by Editor |
Please see attached chart for a schedule of Northland churches. I have also included churches in SE Kansas City, as printed in the SE Serra Club newsletter.
Please find a time weekly to spend one hour with Jesus in thanksgiving for vocations, and ask for an increase in vocations.
