President's Message
Preparing for Easter
  by Nancy Gibson

We are one week away from Easter. How have you spent this Lent? Have you been able to fulfill your Lenten promise? God doesn’t look negatively at us just because we ate a little chocolate that we said we were going to give up for Lent. He asks us to pray, fast and to help others during the Lenten season. It is always wonderful to see so many people who have made a special effort to attend daily Mass. Many of these find that it really is spiritually uplifting and continue to attend daily Mass when Lent is over. I hope your Lent has been spiritually uplifting.

We are soon to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord. This is also the time that many will become in Full Communion with the Church at the Easter Vigil. Please keep these candidates and catechumens in your prayers.

I think most of us are aware of Pope Benedict’s visit to Mexico and Cuba in these past weeks. I know many of you say you don’t want to be part of Facebook but I want to tell you that through Facebook I am “friends” with Vatican news and get all the latest updates on our Pope and also can read his speeches to the people of Mexico and Cuba. You can read his homilies and just keep up with what’s going on in the Vatican. Another friend on Facebook is Timothy Cardinal Dolan. You can keep up with all the latest news on the USCCB by “hanging” with the Cardinal. Don’t forget that you can also see what’s going on with Fr. Mitchel and the Vocation office on Facebook and follow him on Twitter. We are in the era of social media to keep up with our friends whether they are family and close friends or our Catholic family and friends.

When I started the paragraph above the intent was to share with you a small portion of the speech that Pope Benedict XVI gave to the Mexican people regarding the importance of the laity. Here is what he had to say:
“Greater attention is due to the members of the lay faithful most engaged in the fields of catechesis, liturgical animation, charitable activity and social commitment. Their faith formation is critical if the Gospel is to become present and fruitful in contemporary society. It is not right for them to feel treated like second-class citizens in the Church, despite the committed work which they carry out in accordance with their proper vocation, and the great sacrifice which this dedication at times demands of them.”

What struck me about this part of his speech is that as Serrans we do have a commitment to pray and support vocations. Many of our members are catechists and are members of charitable organizations that also support our priests and religious. I believe we have the support of all our priests and we are very fortunate to have an Archbishop who also supports our work. I don’t think we have ever felt like second-class citizens but in some areas this is the case. Continue to be committed to our mission of Serra.

Don’t forget that our meeting this month is on Wednesday, April 4. Our guest speaker is John Jurcyk who will give a talk on “The Trial of Jesus As Seen By A Trial Attorney.” Please come to the meeting and bring a friend.

Mary, Queen of Vocations, Pray For Us.

Sacrament of Confirmation
  by Doug and BJ Taylor

This is the time of year when many Serrans are involved in some manner with the Confirmation of our adolescents. We joyfully witness as these young Catholics receive this special sacramental grace. We are aware that it is a period when their faith is deepened and strengthened. At this formative time in their lives they are becoming more aware of the special place religion plays for them in their family and their community.

Congratulations to all the Serrans who have been assisting with the religious education, ceremonial preparation, responsibilities at the Confirmation ceremonies and attendance as parents, grandparents and friends.
